Alina's love for hairdressing started when she was young- nothing has changed!
'I used to love playing with hair when I was a kid and my passion has continued. I knew the level 2 course at the College would be great for me to get into the industry and I was right. we learnt lots of useful techniques and I loved them all. Cutting, colouring and perming, they are all things I'll eventually use in a salon.'
Alaina especially liked the practical elements of the programme- particularly practicing her customer service skills in The salon NC. 'For me it's all about making sure my clients have a good experience. I used to be shy but the course and the support I received from my personal tutor gave me a massive confidence boost and I can talk to anyone now. I had one client who cut a picture out of a magazine of a hair style she wanted. That was a bit nerve-wracking but I did my best and she loved it. Times like that have made me realise this is definitely what I want to do'.
During her time on the course Alaina took part in various work placements, competitions and hair shows. She came second in the end of term in-house competition and also won an award for 'Best Client Care'. 'The course is very practical. In addition to working in the College's training salon, we had to complete work placements at local salons and compete in hair competitions and shows. It's all great experience as it makes you realise what you can achieve'.
Alaina is hoping to open a salon with her mother in the future. 'My mum completed an intensive hairdressing course at the College too, so we want to eventually open our own salon - we have even registered a business name. In the meantime I want to get a couple of years experience working at a salon'.
